Oversized t-shirts went from skate parks to every college campus for a reason: they are comfortable, they hide nothing awkwardly, and a good print does the styling for you. But "oversized" is not the same as "two sizes too big". Here is how to get the fit right and what to wear it with.
How an oversized tee should fit
A tee cut oversized is designed bigger, so you buy your usual size:
- Shoulders: the seam drops a few centimetres below your shoulder bone.
- Sleeves: wide, ending around mid-upper-arm or towards the elbow.
- Body: roomy but not tent-like — it should hang straight, not balloon.
- Length: around the hip or slightly below. Much past mid-thigh and it starts to look like a dress.
Buying a regular tee two sizes up is not the same thing — the shoulders get too wide and the length too long before the body looks relaxed. If you are between sizes, read our size guide.
1. With straight or relaxed jeans
The safest pairing. A straight or relaxed-fit jean balances the volume on top; very skinny jeans make the tee look heavier and your legs thinner. Leave the tee untucked and roll the sleeves once if they feel long.
2. With cargo pants
The streetwear classic. Cargos in olive, black or beige with a black or white graphic tee, plus chunky sneakers. Keep the cargos relaxed but not baggy enough to bunch heavily at the ankle.
3. With shorts in summer
For Indian summers, an oversized cotton tee with knee-length shorts and slides is hard to beat. Choose shorts that end around the knee — very short shorts under a long tee can disappear.
4. Layered under an open shirt or overshirt
An unbuttoned flannel, denim or linen shirt over a plain or small-print tee adds depth without heat. Keep the tee slightly shorter than the outer layer, or the same length — not longer.
5. With joggers for travel days
Joggers with cuffs keep the silhouette neat at the bottom. Match colours (black-on-black, grey-and-white) for a clean look on long journeys.
6. Smart-casual, with chinos
A plain oversized tee in white, black or beige with tapered chinos and clean white sneakers works for a casual office or a dinner out. Skip loud prints for this one.
Shoes and small details
- Chunky or high-top sneakers suit the volume of an oversized tee best.
- Slides for summer and casual days; clean white sneakers for smart-casual.
- A cap, a simple chain or a watch is enough — the tee is already the statement.
Colours that are easy to style
Black, white, beige, navy and maroon go with almost everything you own. If the tee has a big multicolour print, keep the rest of the outfit plain.
Back prints: wear them proudly
Many of our oversized tees carry a large print on the back and a small one on the chest. Don't hide it under a backpack — use a sling bag, and let people see it when you walk past.
