An oversized t-shirt is the easiest thing in your wardrobe to wear — and the easiest to wear badly. Too much fabric on top and too much below and the outfit looks like pyjamas. The fix is simple: balance a loose top with something more fitted or more structured below, then let one detail do the talking.
Here are ten looks that work, from college days to weekend plans.
First, get the size right
Most oversized tees are cut roomy on purpose: the shoulder seam drops below your shoulder, the sleeves reach towards the elbow and the hem sits at the hip or upper thigh. So for the classic oversized look, take your usual size — don't size up. Petite? Consider one size down so the hem doesn't swallow your shorts. Our size guide explains the measurements.
1. With biker shorts
The most comfortable outfit of the summer. Let the tee fall loose over fitted cycling shorts so just a few centimetres of the shorts show, and add white sneakers. It works for errands, travel and lazy Sundays.
2. Half-tucked into straight or wide-leg jeans
Tuck only the front of the hem into the waistband (the "French tuck") and leave the back loose. It shows your waist, keeps the relaxed shape and makes a printed tee look put together. Straight, mom or wide-leg jeans all work; very skinny jeans can make the top look heavier.
3. With cargo pants and chunky sneakers
This is the streetwear uniform. Pair a graphic or back-print tee with relaxed cargos, roll the sleeves once and finish with chunky sneakers and a crossbody bag. A cap or a few silver rings finish the look. More ideas in our women's streetwear guide.
4. As a t-shirt dress
If you are petite and the tee is long enough to cover you comfortably, wear it as a mini dress with a belt at the waist, or loose with sneakers. Try it on and sit down in it before you go out — if it rides up, wear biker shorts underneath.
5. Knotted with a high-waisted skirt
Gather the hem at one side and tie a small knot, or tuck the knot inside so it looks neat. A denim, pleated or satin midi skirt with a knotted tee is a good contrast of casual and dressy.
6. With joggers or track pants
For an easy athleisure look, keep the colours close — black on grey, beige on brown, lavender on white. Cuffed joggers keep the shape neat at the ankle so the outfit doesn't look sloppy.
7. Layered under an open shirt or jacket
On cooler evenings, throw an unbuttoned flannel shirt, denim jacket or bomber over your tee. Leave it open so the print shows. This is also how you take an oversized tee from day to night.
8. Indo-western, with palazzos or dhoti pants
A plain or softly printed oversized tee looks surprisingly good with flowing palazzos or dhoti pants and kolhapuris or juttis. Keep the print simple — a small chest print or a neckline detail — so the outfit doesn't fight itself.
9. Sleeves rolled, hair up — let the back print show
A big back print is the whole point of the tee, so don't hide it under open hair or a backpack. Tie your hair up, use a crossbody bag instead, and the print becomes the outfit.
10. Monochrome, head to toe
All black, all white or all beige looks considered with zero effort. Match the tee to your pants and change the texture — denim, cotton, nylon — so it doesn't look flat. A graphic in one bright colour (neon pink, yellow) pops against a monochrome base.
Quick rules that always work
- Loose on top, fitted or structured below — or tuck to show your waist.
- One statement at a time: a loud print with plain bottoms, or a plain tee with bold pants.
- Shoes change the mood: white sneakers for casual, chunky sneakers for street, sandals for summer.
- Cotton for Indian summers: a cotton tee breathes and absorbs sweat; check the fabric on the product page.
