A printed t-shirt fades and cracks for three reasons: heat, friction and harsh chemicals. Avoid those and your favourite tee will look good for a long time. Here's the routine.

The 30-second version

  1. Turn it inside out.
  2. Wash cold — 30°C or below.
  3. Mild detergent, no bleach.
  4. Dry in the shade, not in strong direct sun.
  5. Never iron directly on the print.

Washing

Turn it inside out

This is the single biggest thing you can do. Inside out, the print rubs against the inside of the tee, not against zips, jeans and the drum of the machine.

Use cold water

Hot water softens the print layer and can shrink cotton. A cold or 30°C cycle cleans everyday tees perfectly well.

Choose a gentle cycle, or hand wash

Use the gentle or delicate cycle, and don't overload the machine — clothes need room to move. If you hand wash, swirl the tee in soapy water for a few minutes, rinse and press the water out. Don't scrub the print.

Mild detergent, no bleach

Bleach and strong stain removers fade colours and attack the print. Use a mild liquid detergent, and for a stain, treat just that spot gently.

Wash dark colours separately the first time

A new black or maroon tee can release a little dye in its first wash, so wash it with similar colours.

Skip long soaks

An hour in a bucket is fine; leaving a tee soaking overnight is not good for the print.

Drying

  • Air dry on a hanger or a line. Hanging keeps the shape.
  • Dry inside out, in the shade. The Indian sun is strong — hours of direct sunlight fade both the fabric and the print.
  • Avoid hot tumble drying. If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat.
  • Don't wring hard. Twisting stretches the fabric and strains the print.

Ironing

Iron the tee inside out, on a low to medium setting, or put a thin cloth between the iron and the print. A hot iron directly on a print can melt or smudge it.

Storing

Fold printed tees rather than hanging them for months — long hanging can stretch the shoulders. If you fold along the print, don't press a hard crease into it.

Why prints crack — and how to avoid it

Cracking usually comes from heat (hot washes, hot dryers, ironing on the print) and from stretching the print hard when it's wet. Follow the routine above and it largely doesn't happen.

Our tees are printed in-house with DTF printing. Curious how it works and why it's durable? Read what DTF printing is.

Bonus: keeping cotton soft

Most of our tees are bio-washed cotton, already treated to feel soft. Cold washes and shade drying keep it that way — here's what bio-washing means.
